Why is area rows × columns?

Area = rows × columns.

Areasquares that cover the inside
3 rows × 4 = 12
Fence(perimeter) the length around the outside
4 + 3 + 4 + 3 = 14
Missing side24 squares in rows of 6
24 = 6 × 4

A rectangle is rows of equal squares, so you don’t have to count them one by one: rows × squares in each row, or length × width. If each square is 1 cm on a side, the answer is in square centimetres (cm²). The fence around the outside is a different measure: two pens with the same fence can hold very different areas, and the squarest one holds the most.
