🔟 Place-Value Slide

Why isn’t ×10 just “add a 0”?

34 × 10 = 340. Looks like we just stuck a 0 on the end. So why does 0.3 × 10 come out as 3, not 0.30? Let’s find out what ×10 really does.

×10 is a slide, not a sticker.

The decimal point never moves. A 0 only shows up when a seat is left empty, so 34 × 10 = 340, but 0.3 × 10 = 3 and 45 ÷ 10 = 4.5.
