What is 3 × ¼?
You know 3 × 2 means three 2s. So what does 3 × ¼ mean? Some people say 3/12. Let’s lay quarter pieces end to end and see where we land.

⭐ You saw through the trap
3 × ¼ is three quarters.
3 × 2three hops of 2
= 6
= 6
3 × 14three hops of a quarter
= 34
= 34
6 × 14six quarters
= 64 = 1 and 24
= 64 = 1 and 24
Multiplying by a whole number means “this many of”. The bottom number names the size of the piece, and the size doesn’t change when you take more pieces. Only the count on top grows. So 3 × ¼ = ¼ + ¼ + ¼ = ¾. (The 3/12 trick gives 1/4 again: a twelfth is so small that 3 of them only fill one quarter.)
