🔁 Patterns
Does a pattern repeat or grow?
Some patterns go round and round. Some get bigger every step. Find out which is which, and why “step 10 is double step 5” is a trap.

“Step 5 has 11 tiles. Step 10 is twice as far, so it has 22!”
Doubling counts the yellow starting tile twice.
A growing pattern follows its rule: add 2 each step.

Repeat: find the core. Grow: find the rule.
🔴🔵🔵 🔴🔵🔵the core comes back:
bead 20 is 🔵
bead 20 is 🔵
3, 5, 7, 9add 2 every step:
it keeps growing
it keeps growing
Step 10 = 211 yellow + 10 pairs,
not 2 × 11
not 2 × 11
A repeating pattern has a core that comes round again and again, so to find a far-away piece, count in whole cores and look at what’s left over. A growing pattern changes by the same rule every step. To predict a far-away step, use the rule. Doubling step 5 doesn’t give step 10, because the starting piece only shows up once.
